The Best Of Hot Baths

For the end of winter and in the upcoming spring months, hot baths and showers feel amazing after a cold or rainy day. However, an expert on all things beauty, Tiffany Elie, says differently. “Hot baths and showers take a toll on the skin. Hot water can strip your skin of moisture, leading to flaking, itching, and other irritants.” Tiffany has provided tips and tricks to make sure you retain your moisture, and still enjoy those long, hot showers and baths.

For starters, exfoliation can help remove dead skin cells that block your moisturizers to penetrate into the skin. You can use manual exfoliators like towels, luffas, and brushes. Scrubs also help remove the dry skin as well. “Exfoliation helps you get a closer shave and avoid ingrown hairs, and keeps you moisturized throughout the whole day,” Tiffany says.

Another tip includes adding an oil to the bath when soaking in a hot tub. Oils can help prevent moisture loss, and is super easy to use. Just remember: be extra careful when getting in and out of the tub it will be very slippery. One way to reduce the slickness is to add slip resistant strips to to the bottom of the tub.

PRO TIP: Always remember to add a moisturizer or body oil within 3 minutes of getting out of the shower or bath.

“Your skin is made up of oil and water, and when you shower, you strip your skin of both”, Tiffany explains. “The drier you are; the more oil you need in the product.” If you rub in your moisturizer and you still feel dry, then you need a richer moisturizer. The “richness” of a moisturizer have different levels: oil, lotion, and cream, depending on how dry your skin is.

RICHNESS LEVELS:

  • Oil is a light weight option to add moisture. This will soak in without any tacky or residue.
  • Lotions are the next level up with lots of hydration and a little oil to replace the moisture loss in the skin. Lotions are great if your skin is normal most of the year, but need that extra hydration during the winter months.
  • Body creams and butters are the richest option and have the most amount of oil and moisture replacement. This is best for people with dry skin as it is very intense and rich. If you’re not usually dry, this will make you feel greasy and will not work to the best of its ability.’
